Budget Travel to the Black Sea Region 2024

The Turkish Black Sea region is a fascinating part of the county that is only just starting to be discovered by foreign visitors. It has a natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality that is difficult to match. Stretching along the entire northern coast of Turkey, this green and mountainous area is full of wonderful towns and cities with plenty of things to see and do. The weather here is generally much cooler than in other parts of the county, and outside the summer months it can often rain. 

The historic town of Safranbolu in my opinion is a must-see if you intend to visit the region. It has well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture with wonderful traditional wooden mansions. Apart from that it has the historic Cinci Hamam which is an old Turkish bath and Cinci Han, which is a historical building that is a wonderful place to have a coffee or have something to eat. 

If you travel further east, you´ll come to the small coastal town of Amasra. It is a popular tourist destination and has a pretty harbour and lots of good restaurants. There are also some Byzantine ruins, and quite nice beaches, although the sea is usually very cold, unless you are British or from Northern Europe. While you are there, you should try some of the local inexpensive local dishes, including anchovy dishes and Pide (Turkish Pizza).

For those people who love nature, the Black Sea region is a dream destination, with the stunning Kaçkar Mountains. There are also many tea plantations that you can visit around the city of Rize, which is also known as the “Tea Capital of Turkey.”

Trabzon is a major city and a popular tourist destination in the summer time, especially for Arab visitors from the Gulf States. The city is the gateway to the beautiful Uzungöl Lake and is also located close to the Sumela Monastery, a 4th-century monastery which is carved into the mountain cliff side.
