Welcome to the Turkish Aegean!

The Turkish Aegean coast, stretching from Çanakkale in the north to Marmaris in the south, offers visitors a beautiful mix of natural wonders, ancient history, and lively coastal towns. This region of Turkey attracts visitors from all over the world, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, clean beaches, and lovely seaside villages.

Marmaris is a busy resort town with a lively harbour, a mediaeval castle, and plenty of chances to enjoy water sports and Blue Cruises on traditional Turkish gulets yatchs. Nearby, you can visit Marmaris National Park, which has cool hiking trails and hidden bays perfect for a quiet picnic. If you go further south to the Bodrum Peninsula, you´ll find whitewashed houses, exciting nightlife, and historical sites like the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.

Did you know that Bodrum is also famous for its underwater archaeology museum, which is located in Bodrum Castle? It’s definitely worth a visit.

The Datça Peninsula is a more peaceful coastal town with untouched beaches and quiet fishing villages, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The almonds grown in Datça are famous and quite delicious. The easiest way to get there from Bodrum is by taking the Bodrum Ferribot, which is an inexpensive ferry service

If you love history, then you should definitely visit the ancient ruins of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This location reveals the region’s rich Greco-Roman history. The nearby town of Kuşadası is a great starting point to explore Ephesus, and you should also check out the beautiful Dilek Peninsula National Park.

Not far from Ephesus, you can also visit the House of the Virgin Mary, which is a pilgrimage site believed to be where Mary spent her last days. I also like the Selcuk Castle, which is located in the town of the same name, is located just a few minutes by taxi from Ephesus.

Izmir, one of Turkey’s largest cities, is a lively and modern place with a lovely waterfront area called the Kordon. It’s also home to the ancient city of Smyrna, which has many museums and shopping spots. Izmir’s Kemeralti Bazaar is a must-see destination for anyone who loves local markets and delicious street food. For me, the people of Izmir make it worth visiting. They are extremely friendly and open-minded.

The small holiday resort of Çeşme, which is located west of Izmir, is famous for its beautiful beaches and thermal springs. It’s a popular spot for windsurfing, and there’s a charming marina with lots of cafes and restaurants. The Çeşme Castle offers excellent views of the town and sea.

Kuşadası, another exciting spot, is known for its lively atmosphere and as a gateway to Ephesus. It has wonderful beaches, a bustling port for cruise ships, and the nearby Güvercinada (Pigeon Island), which has a cool fortress and offers stunning sunset views.

Whether you’re interested in the region’s natural beauty, historical sites, or lively coastal towns, the Turkish Aegean offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you amazed. Also, don’t miss out on trying some of the local and inexpensive Turkish kebabs while you are there, such as “Çökertme Kebab” from Bodrum, which is a tasty combination of marinated meat, yoghurt, and fried potatoes.

The Turkish Aegean FAQs

What are the top attractions and things to do in Bodrum?

Bodrum is famous for its lovely beaches, historic castle, and lively nightlife. Top places to visit include the Bodrum Castle and its Underwater Archaeology Museum, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Bodrum Amphitheatre, and the busy Bodrum Marina with lots of restaurants, bars, and shops. You can also enjoy water sports, boat tours, and day trips to nearby islands. For something different, visit the Zeki Müren Art Museum, dedicated to Turkey’s beloved singer and actor, or explore the ancient Myndos Gate, the remains of the old city walls built by King Mausolus.

How can I get from Marmaris to Pamukkale?

The easiest way to travel from Marmaris to Pamukkale is by bus. The trip takes about 2–3 hours. Buses depart regularly from Marmaris’ main bus station. You can also hire a private driver or join a guided day tour that includes transportation. If you enjoy a more scenic route, consider renting a car to explore the countryside and stop by small villages along the way.

Is Pamukkale worth visiting, and what should I see there?

Yes, Pamukkale is amazing and definitely worth visiting. The main attraction is the terraced hot springs and white pools, called the “Cotton Castles.” You can walk on the white terraces and swim in the warm pools. Other fascinating places to see are the ancient ruins of Hierapolis and the Necropolis, which is an ancient cemetery. For a unique experience, visit the Cleopatra’s Pool, a thermal pool where you can swim among ancient columns and ruins.

How much time do I need to see the main sights in Ephesus?

To see the main sights in Ephesus, plan to spend at least 2–3 hours there. This will give you enough time to see the Library of Celsus, the Grand Theatre, the Terrace Houses, and the Temple of Artemis. Some people prefer to spend a whole day in Ephesus to explore more and visit the museum. If you have extra time, don’t miss the nearby Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk, which houses many artefacts from the site.

What are the best beaches in the Bodrum area?

Some of the best beaches in Bodrum are Bitez Beach, Gümbet Beach, Yahşi Beach, and Karaincir Beach. These beaches have soft sand, clear blue water, and lots of activities to do, such as beach clubs, water sports, and restaurants. You can also take boat tours to find hidden coves and beaches. For a quieter experience, visit the secluded and less crowded Torba Beach or explore the hidden gem of Aquarium Bay, known for its crystal-clear water perfect for snorkelling.

Is it easy to get around the Ephesus archaeological site?

The Ephesus site is pretty big and spread out, so it’s a good idea to join a guided tour or rent an audio guide. There are clear pathways and signs, but the ground can be uneven in some places, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you can avoid the heat and the large crowds, making your visit more enjoyable. Also, for some interesting photo opportunities, look out for the ancient public toilets and the grand facade of the Temple of Hadrian.
