The ethnography museum is located next to the archaeological museum and is not far from Konak Square. This museum is also worth a visit if you want to learn more about the lives of people in Izmir over the years.
Balçova Cable Car
You can experience breath-taking views of Izmir from the Balçova Cable Car. Just hop on, and you’ll reach Balçova Hill’s panoramic views of the city, mountains, and sea.
This exhilarating cable car ride is a perfect way to appreciate Izmir’s natural beauty. You can get there by taking a metro or tram to Frettin Altay station, then taking the 169 bus to the cable car station. You should get off the bus at Sakaraya Street, just near the university building.
In just a few minutes, the cable cars will take you to the top of the 320-metre-high view point. You can enjoy the views from a restaurant or coffee shop. The cable car costs around one euro and is worth the price because of the spectacular views.
Mount Pagos and the Kadifekale Castle
A visit to Izmir wouldn’t be complete without exploring the ancient sites of Mount Pagos and Kadifekale Castle, which is also known as the Velvet Castle. Alexander the Great first constructed this impressive fortress in the 4th century, and the Byzantines rebuilt it in the medieval era.
It is located about 2 kilometres inland from the coast, towards the back of Izmir, and offers excellent panoramic views of the city.
If you are feeling energetic, you can hike up the 186-metre mountain to Mount Pagos, which is more like a big hill in reality. When you get to the top, you´ll find the remains of this ancient Kadifekale Castle. Alexander the Great originally built it in the 4th century, but the Romans and Byzantines later expanded it.
Most of it is now in ruins, but there are still fascinating remains to see and many interesting pathways to take you around the castle’s grounds.
At the top, you will be able to enjoy breath-taking views of the city, including the impressive rock sculpture of Ataturk.
The entrance fee is a little expensive, at about 15 euros per person. However, if you have a Turkey Museum Pass or an Aegean Museum Pass, the entrance fee is included.
You could get a bus or even take a taxi to the foot of the hill, although walking there from the city centre is not too difficult.
However, if it’s midday in the middle of the summer, you should probably avoid walking there.
Day trips from Izmir
If you’re looking to explore more of the area surrounding Izmir, there are several fantastic day tours available, including Ephesus, Çesme, Alacati and Pergamom (another ancient city), If I had to choose between Ephesus and Pergamon I would go to Ephesus. If you have time and love history, do both.
Ephesus
One of the must-visit destinations near Izmir is the ancient city of Ephesus. This famous ancient city is just a short drive away. Ephesus is famous for its well-preserved historical sites and fascinating ruins.You can explore the ancient Library of Celsus, marvel at the grandeur of the Great Theatre, and wander through the marble streets of this enchanting archaeological site.
Other important sites to see in Ephesus include the terrace houses and the House of the Virgin Mary. Selcuk Castle is another historical attraction near Ephesus and also worth a visit. You can get a regular bus from Izmir bus station to the town of Selçuk for around 4 euros each way (1h.45m). In the summer I would get there early. There is a bus at 6am and 7am, so that you can have breakfast in Selçuk and get to Ephesus when it opens and before the bus tours and crowds arrive. From Selçuk you can get a taxi to the gates of Ephesus for just a few euros, its not far. Be sure to ask the price before getting in the taxi, to avoid confusion. If you are really on a tight budget, you can even get the dolmus mini bus for just a few cents of a euro to Ephesus gates and then cross the main road.
Çesme and Alaçatı
If you’re craving a beach getaway, head to the beautiful coastal town of Çesme. With its crystal-clear waters and golden sandy beaches, Çesme is the perfect place to relax and unwind. It´s a popular holiday resort in the summer months, so you should expect it to be busy.
The town has a trendy atmosphere with higher prices than Izmir. However, if you want a fantastic day out swimming in the Aegean, sunbathing, and relaxing on a wonderful beach, going to Cesme may be worth the effort.
Illica Beach is undoubtedly the most popular beach, but it is located several kilometres north of the city. It is one of the best beaches in Turkey, with golden sand and turquoise waters. There are buses and Dolmus minibuses that can take you there from the centre of Çesme.
If beaches aren´t your type of thing, you can explore the charming town centre with its narrow cobblestone streets and cosy cafes, or even combine it with a short trip to the nearby town of Alacati, which is also a beautiful, trendy get-away for the Turkish elite.
To get to Çesme, there are several buses per day that leave from Izmir city bus station.
Izmir to Çesme: 1h.55m; Kamil Koç; Flixbus. Make sure you buy a return ticket to Izmir to ensure that you get back there, as buses can sell out quickly in the summer.

The ideal weather, travel season, and availability of affordable accommodations and attractions all play a significant role in determining when to visit this vibrant Turkish city.
What is the best time of year to visit Izmir?
Izmir experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Around 300 days of sunshine grace the city each year, making it an ideal destination for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
The summer months of June to September are the peak travel season in Izmir. This is when the weather is at its hottest, with temperatures often reaching 30 degrees Celsius or higher. While the summer offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the city’s beaches and outdoor attractions, it can also be crowded and more expensive. If you prefer a lively atmosphere and don’t mind the heat, visiting during the summer months can be a good option, but it isn´t my favourite time of year. I find May and early June, or late September to the end of October, to be the best times of year to visit. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, with fewer tourists.
Winter (December to February) is the offseason in Izmir, with cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall. It may be harder to enjoy the city’s outdoor activities than in the summer, but it’s still fun. Check the weather in Izmir.
